In recent years, Vietnamese young people have been more and more interested in the country’s ancient cultural customs and traditions. One of the most prominent aspects is the costumes of the bygone era. Recognizing the need to learn more about the ancient costumes of Vietnam, in 2018, Vietnam Centre partnered with Comicola as well as various writers and artists to prepare for the book “Weaving a Realm''. The project aimed to provide a general understanding of Vietnamese ancient attires in the Early Lê era (1428-1527).
The publication was also the result of a successful crowdfunding campaign, in which the organization had fundraised to the tune of over 200 million VND thanks to ample interest from netizens. This fact again proves the heels of mounting interest from young Vietnamese in ancient Vietnamese culture.
For this project, Vietnam Centre hopes to shine the limelight on a less-known corner of Vietnamese history that’s no less enthralling. Besides getting young Vietnamese and keen foreigners interested in Vietnamese ancient culture, we believe that the book can also serve as reference material for artists and designers.
"Weaving a Realm" features hundreds of full-colored pages, written in both Vietnamese and English, and retail at VND250,000. The content of the book is divided into multiple chapters, each of which covers a typical item of fashion in the Early Lê’s court.
The audience would go from the most basic forms, such as Giao Lĩnh (cross-collared robe), Viên Lĩnh (round-collared robe), Đối Khâm (parallel-collared robe), to the attires of certain classes in the court, including the Emperor's Hoàng Bào and the Empress' Địch Y,...
Inherited the spirit and knowledge from the previous classic works, such as “Vietnamese Costumes” by Dr. Đoàn Thị Tình, “Fashion of the Lê - Trịnh Era” by artist Trịnh Quang Vũ and “Thousands of Years of Caps and Robes” by scholar Trần Quang Đức, “Weaving a Realm” is expected to contribute a more easy-to-access source for those who want to learn about Vietnamese ancient costumes.
"The self-governing dynasties of Vietnam, when creating national institutions, often set costumes as one of their foremost priorities. That is how the name for this book — “Weaving a Realm”—came to be. We want to tell the story of “national identity” building underneath the story of textiles and attires.”
- Preface, “Weaving a Realm” -
“When it comes to Vietnam, only the War comes to mind of international friends and even many Vietnamese, and nothing else. That fact tremendously pains us, as a brilliant culture with thousands-year-old tradition can be so arbitrarily defined by a war that took place not so long ago.”
